The National Junior Honor Society and Junior Class Council are organizing the annual Middle School Carnival Social. It’s a great opportunity for students to get together and to enjoy the afternoon.
The social has come a long way since its original inception. Over 8 years ago, it was the long-standing Valentine’s Dance, and in 2016, it was changed to the Mardi Gras Dance. Just three years ago, the Junior Class Council brought games to the table, and it was moved to the fieldhouse to accommodate for the extra activities. Now, it’s officially the Carnival Social, as an emphasis was put onto getting together and socializing.
At the event, concessions will be sold, a wide variety of games will be free to play, and there will be a balloon backdrop provided by Mrs. Ochoa for students to take pictures with and look back positively on the memories shared that day.
The history of Mardi Gras finds its roots in France. It’s a French word that translates to “Fat Tuesday” which stems from the tradition of using all of the fats in the home before Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season. New Orleans is particularly popular for its celebrations, but any place worldwide with Christian heritage has its own take on Mardi Gras.
Eighth-grader Nolan Doctor, NJHS President, is positively anticipating the event. “I’m excited to be able to help others have fun…while having fun in the process,” Doctor said.
Mrs. Leber, co-sponsor of NJHS and NHS, said, “I’m excited to see students having fun and playing the different games we’ve come up with…to keep it fresh.”
To attend, students must have passed all classes and not have acquired any suspensions in Quarter 3. Tickets will be sold in the cafeteria by the panther mural next to the main doors during C and D lunches for $5. They will be sold only on Wednesday and Thursday, and they will not be available at any other time. When purchasing the ticket, as well as entering the social, the student-issued school ID needs to be shown. Dismissal will be from Door C, the bus-rider doors.
The Middle School Carnival Social will be held after school from 2:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. on February 15 in the fieldhouse — so, if you and your friends have a free afternoon — why not spend it at the Carnival Social?
