Being born deaf into a hearing family may sound like a bad thing. However, according to Mr. Maloney “Being deaf is not a deficit or something to be fixed, but rather a natural variation in human experience.” Mr. Maloney demonstrates this by telling personal stories in class, which show the strengths of being deaf.
Mr. Maloney started teaching American Sign Language or ASL at Griffith Jr/Sr High School this school year. “I accepted the job offer because I have always wanted to teach American Sign Language to the students that need sign language to express their needs better,” said Mr. Maloney. He’s had a positive experience at Griffith during his time here and
enjoys communicating with fellow staff and students. He plans to work here until his retirement.
Other than a teacher, Mr. Maloney is also a remodeler. Maloney likes to flip, or remodel, rooms in his house. He also loves to go camping, hiking, and study American History. Mr. Maloney has taught Griffith that it doesn’t matter how someone is born, because they are as strong as everyone else, if not stronger.
