When the time is right, and the crowd is in awe, the server hits the ball, and it’s in! Two players volley back and forth with the ball, but one person will come out on top in the end.
Last Thursday afternoon, Griffith, in their second game of the season, took on visiting Lake Station. All players from both sides fought hard for the win in the blazing heat, but the game ended up in a 2-2 tie.
Senior Aiden Anthony won a singles match in an unexpected comeback performance. “I came back from a 4-0 deficit, so I’d say the match went well,” Anthony said. He started playing tennis last year, and Thursday was his first win in his high school career. “It was a special moment for me. I mean, it’s always great when you get your first ever win in a sport.”
The team also won the doubles match. Junior Victor Scortino and sophomore Tyler Drozd, doubles partners, synergized well on the court and their work paid off. “Our communication was on point today,” Scortino said. “Our serves were also amazing. The best we’ve ever done.”
Though the Griffith tennis team did have two game losses that day, they were hard-fought – and the team is still undefeated in overall matches. Now the team just needs to keep the momentum going for the rest of the season!
