GRIFFITH, Ind. — Balancing academics and athletics can be a challenge for some student-athletes at Griffith High School, and for some, it has impacted their ability to compete.
Recently, the boys’ junior varsity basketball team faced cancellations for some in-season games due to several players being academically ineligible. While the situation was disappointing for the athletes, it served as a reminder of the importance of maintaining grades.
Anthony Felciano, a Griffith High School student-athlete who plays for the boys’ baseball team, said time management is the biggest challenge he faces when balancing school and sports.
“It can be very difficult,” Felciano said. “You have to talk to your teachers so they can understand the time crunch and maybe work something out.”
From a teacher’s perspective, clear communication is key. Griffith High School teacher Mrs. Jongsma emphasized the importance of students keeping teachers informed if they are facing conflicts between athletics and assignments.
“If a student has a big game and missed an assignment, I would allow them to turn it in late with some consequences,” Jongsma said. “I would need the student to reach out as it’s happening, not two months later. There may be some natural consequences, such as points deducted for missing the due date, but it’s more likely that I will accept late work if there is communication beforehand.”
Despite the challenges, students who manage their time effectively and stay proactive with their teachers often find success in balancing both academics and sports. Felciano emphasized that student-athletes must demonstrate hard work both on and off the field to build a positive reputation.
“It’s not just about what you can do on the field or court,” Felciano said. “It’s also about how you act off the field and being a good, hardworking student.”
