Griffith High School has a nice library. However, it is not utilized nearly enough by our students. The Griffith students should have more access to our library. There are numerous resources Griffith students can benefit from by spending more time in the library.
Currently, the only use the Library has is a study hall for kids with bad grades. Students who aren’t doing well in their classes go down their for additional help and to be monitored closely to make sure they’re doing their work. There should be more purpose behind the library.
Griffith students maybe go in the library once a month, and that’s only when a substitute teacher is not available, or they are renewing a mandatory book for their classes. Otherwise, there is not enough time in between passing periods, and there is little to no incentive to visit the library in the before or after school. Bluntly, students only go to the library when they are forced to. The computer lab in the library hasn’t been used nearly enough either, and it is beginning to become just a waste of money.
By offering more programs in our library, it creates the opportunity for our students to use the library more. Students should be allowed to go to the library in Advisory, or whenever they have free time, not as a punishment for having bad grades. Griffith Librarian, Mrs. Perez stated, “Students very rarely will come down and check out a book they enjoy, and almost never use the peaceful space to get work done.”
Increasing the library usage as a school has multiple benefits, including increasing overall grade percentages, raising SAT scores, and creating a better vocabulary for students. These benefits should be an incentive for students to utilize the library more.
The Griffith library has so many great books, a very nice computer lab, and the most peaceful working area in the school. Students need to get better usage out of this resourceful part of Griffith High School.
