GRIFFITH, Ind. — This year’s golf season has just begun for the Griffith High School boys golf team. The golfers, as a whole, have been putting in the work to perfect their swing.
One standout is sophomore Dexter Vemmer, whose motivation to join the team began with something simple: the desire to earn a GHS letterman patch. “I saw the upperclassmen wearing it and thought it was something I really wanted,” he said.
What started as a goal for recognition turned into something more meaningful. For Vemmer, golf has become a potential pathway to college scholarships and a way to build a future. “It’s more than just a game now,” he said. “Golf could help me go further in life if chosen to.”
One of Dexter’s favorite moments so far was earning a par during one of his first matches against Wheeler. “It was one of the first times I really felt proud of being out there,” he said. “That moment gave me confidence and made me want to keep pushing myself.”
The team continues to practice with focus and commitment, often under the radar compared to other sports, but with just as much heart. Coach Christopher Tomcsi has been emphasizing consistency and providing the golfers with mental toughness, and it is clear the players are taking that to heart based on their plays.
As the season continues, Griffith boys golf is proving that success isn’t always loud — it’s also the quiet dedication, the early morning practices, and the moments of personal growth on the course.
