To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is a teen romance movie based off of the novel of the same name and made its debut on Netflix in August 2018. Sixteen-year-old Lara Jean Covey wrote letters to all her past crushes that weren’t supposed to be sent out. One day, her youngest sister sent them out, causing mass chaos to her love life, when all the boys one by one confronted her about the letters. 

   New rising actress Lana Condor plays the main character Lara Jean Covey. Her cast mate, Noah Centineo, plays Lara’s initial love interest, Peter Kavinsky. Janel Parrish and Anna Cathcart play Lara’s sisters, Margot and Kitty. 

   A special quality of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is it’s diversity. Asian author of the novel Jenny Han had a big influence on the casting of the movie. The novel and movie are based off of the protagonist Lara Jean and her Asian-American family. Han was wanting to turn the novel into a movie, but every production company she met with wanted to whitewash Lara Jean’s character. She finally signed to a company that agreed to make the protagonist and her family Asian-American. Another debate that occurred was whether or not the main male love interest should be Asian or not. Han favored the Asian option. Most directors favored the opposite. Ultimately, the movie featured an American actor to portray the character. Han was angered that the final cast didn’t feature any diverse actors, but all American actors.

   Condor and her cast have been hinting at a sequel to the movie called P.S. I Still Love You, 

based off of the second book in the 3-part series. Han says she would like a sequel because there are parts in the second novel that she’d like to see made into a movie. The sequel would most likely star the same actors and actresses from the first movie. 

   News sources on the internet are writing about the truth behind Lara’s lock screen in the scene where she’s contemplating if she loves Kavinsky or not. The movie’s director, Susan Johnson, said that the picture wasn’t posed at all. “The two of them were in the green room on set at the high school location, in the area where we put the actors. They actually were sleeping on the couch in that room like that, so we just stood over them and took that picture and it’s so friggin’ cute,” said Johnson.
