On November 2nd, Disney released its spinoff of the classic holiday tale The Nutcracker called The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn actress Mackenzie Foy takes the lead roll, Clara, who is transported into a magical world of gingerbread soldiers and an army of mice. Rated PG in the drama/fantasy genre, the run time is about an hour and 40 minutes.
Based on the PG rating and dramatic fantasy genre, children around 10 or younger would find this movie enchanting, while audiences of older ages might find it corny and unentertaining.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, this Disney movie was one of the worst ever filmed. The tomatometer gave a score of 34%, whereas movies like Wreck It Ralph Breaks the Internet and Mary Poppins Returns had scores of 88 and 78%. Critics say that the movie has an absence of “transporting Yuletide spirit” and exceptional dance routines. The overall average rating was a 5.2/10.
Famous national newspaper critics often say that the plot is all over the place, and that the important aspects of a good movie were barely touched on, such as feminine leadership. One critic specifically said that the use of computer graphics in creating the Mice King could potentially give small children nightmares.
On a better note, Foy was announced as a strong female lead who turned her clique and “snooze-worthy” lines into something more enjoyable. At 17 years old, her youthful and freckled porcelain like face gives to the character of Clara.
