Pi Day Celebration at GHS

March 14 was Pi day. Pi is a mathematical constant approximated to 3.14, used in pretty much every formula involving the dimensions of a circle. At GHS, teachers and students celebrate by buying pies for class. But Spanish teachers Castulo Perez, who coaches the Boys Varsity Soccer Team, and Veronica Garcia, head of International Club, took the celebrations a step further. At lunch on March 15, they held a fundraiser for International Club where volunteer teachers, including themselves, had whip cream pies thrown at them by students and other teachers. One pie cost two dollars; students could purchase three pies for five dollars.

“It’s a little scary at first [to have pie thrown at you], and after a while, whip cream can start to smell,“ said Garcia. “But it’s a time for teachers and students to connect and just have fun. International Club celebrates Pi Day because math is an international language. We hope it’ll become an annual event and get bigger every year.”
