The Precalculus Honors and AP Calculus AB classes, which are taught by Christina Chidichimo, took a trip to Purdue Northwest on Friday, November 15. Because both of the classes are dual credit courses offered by Purdue to the classes, they offered the students a chance to tour the campus in order to urge the students to attend after high school.

A group of about 60 students took the trip to learn more about the campus. The two classes were split up and were sent with Purdue tour guides to learn more about the campus. The students were able to walk around and see various parts of the campus, learn more about the dorms and their pricing, sit in an actual math class taught by a Purdue professor, and take part in learning about the majors and minors.

They also did an activity at the end of the tour for all of the students to go from table to table talking with Purdue students and professors to learn more about certain majors and classes. Many students stated that they learned more about their desired career and about minors they could do alongside their major to further their education. Students learned that they can get a minor in an area with 15 credit hours, which is equal to about 5 classes.

Dual credit benefits high school students by allowing them to save money, earn college credits, and experience college-level material. The courses offered must fit the requirements set by Purdue and the students must be taught certain topics within the class for it to be considered Dual credit. By taking these courses in high school, students can begin college with some of their credits and can begin by taking harder classes.

“It felt nice to have a break for a day from class to tour this college. It allowed me to think more about what I want when I go to college,” said junior Justine Richman.

Purdue Northwest workers plan on making this a yearly trip to allow everyone the opportunity to learn more about the campus and about the options they will have in college.
