Memorial Day

Sarah Issa, Reporter

For some, Memorial Day is a day off school and work to spend time with family. While parades and barbecuing are widely associated with the holiday, Memorial Day has a much bigger meaning. Originally called Decoration Day, this holiday started after the Civil War to honor those who lost their lives fighting in the war. The Civil War took the most lives in American history, so it’s important to take time and acknowledge their bravery and sacrifice. Though this holiday started mainly to honor the heroes who fought in the Civil War it’s now used to celebrate all soldiers who have died in wars. Now every last Monday of May is used to express our gratitude to these fallen soldiers.
