Griffith, Indiana — Griffith Jr./Sr. High School introduced No Tech Days during the 2024-2025 school year, requiring students to forgo the use of iPads for at least one class period.
The initiative began with students generally following the guidelines and putting away their devices as instructed. However, as the school year progressed, the enforcement of No Tech Days appeared to decline, with students increasingly using their iPads in class regardless of the policy.
Assistant Principal Brian Jennings said the concept of No Tech Days emerged from discussions among school administrators during the 2023-2024 school year. “The school corporation and administration discussed iPads and technology, weighing the pros and cons, and ultimately decided to implement No Tech Days to encourage students to experience traditional teaching methods,” Jennings said.
The decision was based on concerns that students were becoming distracted by their devices during class and would benefit from a temporary break from technology. Since much of the school’s curriculum was delivered digitally, some students questioned the need for the policy and expressed confusion about its purpose.
Initially, students followed the No Tech Day guidelines. However, following winter break, the policy was reportedly enforced less frequently. The corresponding decrease in compliance was attributed to a combination of reduced enforcement and the approaching end of the school year.
