Mr. Cameron Ashley is a new teacher here at Griffith, coming from Merrillville High School. He was welcomed aboard in May with an offer to teach computer science and as the boys’ basketball Head Varsity Coach.
Ashley came from the Merrillville School District, where he taught for three years before seeking a better opportunity to show his ability to teach and coach for Griffith. When asked what he would bring to GHS, he stated, “Cultural building is very important; getting everyone involved is what I would like to see.”
He also talked about pushing his players to think bigger than just basketball, saying that playing at the next level means “getting their mind to operate at the next level and in their lives.” Ashley explained that his focus is not only on building athletes but, also on preparing students to handle responsibilities in school and their future careers. Ashley knows what it takes to reach that level and wants to guide his players in the same direction by teaching discipline, teamwork and leadership skills.
Looking ahead Ashley made it clear that his vision for Griffith goes beyond the high school. He stated, “My goal is to get everyone in the community involved from high school level even down to the elementary level.” He hopes to create a program where students, families and the community can come together to build a culture of pride. With his experience and passion, Ashley is ready to make a positive impact at Griffith and help his students succeed.
