Seniors at Griffith High School are reaching the age of eighteen, which means many are now eligible to register to vote—and some are already taking advantage of the opportunity.
With the 2026 midterm elections approaching, there is no better time for new voters to get involved. For many seniors, this will be their first experience participating in an election. Senior Aiden Chavez said, “It’s a way to use your voice. It’s one of the freedoms offered by our country where you can voice your opinion openly.”
Voter turnout among young people has been increasing in recent years, showing that more youth care about voting and making informed decisions. By taking time to learn about issues and candidates, students are preparing not only to vote, but to become active members of their communities.
Registering to vote is a quick and simple process. Senior Jeremiah Fuentes emphasized the importance of participation, saying, “One vote can make a difference when it comes down to the closeness of the elections. My vote can matter.”
Students can register online through Indiana’s official voter registration website or complete a form at the BMV or local county clerk’s office. Seniors are encouraged to register early to avoid last-minute stress as the 2026 elections draw near.
As Election Day approaches, Griffith seniors are stepping up and taking their responsibilities seriously. Understanding how voting works—and why it matters—is an important part of this new chapter. To help motivate her peers, senior Anila Green said, “Offer benefits to voting members and tell them that their opinion matters. If young people are educated to know their vote will matter, then they will start voting more.”
