On February 4th, the Griffith wrestling team went to Regionals at Hobart High School. The wrestlers that participated were Zach Kenny, Nicholas Grahovac, Landon Westenfeld, Connor Cervantes, and Ryan Rose. The only Semi-State qualifiers are Kenny, Cervantes, and Westenfeld. Kenny placed 3rd at the 113 lb weight class, Westenfeld placed 4th at the 132 lb weight class, and Connor Cervantes placed 1st at the 182 lb weight class. Each one of them wrestled 3 matches.

Kenny’s first match was against Marion McClain of Merrillville High School. He defeated him by a pin in 3 minutes and 19 seconds. His next opponent was E’Shawn Tolbert of Portage High School. Kenny was pinned by Tolbert in 4 minutes and 58 seconds. For his 3rd place match was against Andrew Williams of Calumet High School. Kenny defeated Williams 5-4 in overtime puting his overall record 19-6. His first match in Semi-State against Joshua Kite of Mishawaka High School.

Westenfeld’s first match was against Brady Rocket-King from Gary Westside. He won by decision 7-0. His Second match was against David Maldonado of Merrillville High School. Westenfeld was defeated by pin in 1 minute and 45 seconds. His 3rd place match was against Robert Frazier. Westenfeld was defeated by Major Decision 12-4, putting his record at 26-10. His first Semi-State match is against Eleazar Walker of Mishawaka High School.

Lastly, Cervantes faced Kyle Denecke of Whiting High School. He defeated him in 1 minute and 29 seconds. His second match was against Joshua Hubbard of Highland High School. He defeated him in 2 minutes and 53 seconds. His first place match was against Ethan Risner of Portage High School. Cervantes pinned him in 3 minutes and 13 seconds and keeps his undefeated record being 38-0. His first opponent in Semi-State match is against Elijah Brown of Lafayette Jefferson High School.
