GRIFFITH, IN — Griffith Boys Basketball played East Chicago Central on February 27, and celebrated the graduating seniors in basketball and cheer. Griffith lost in a 63 to 62 final.
Riding off momentum from a 4-game winning streak which included a 66 to 45 win against Highland, the Griffith Boys Basketball team was feeling confident going into their Senior Night matchup against East Chicago.
Junior Jaylan Rockett led the team in scoring with 20 points and led with four assists as well. Junior Davon Thomaston led with seven total rebounds and two blocks, and junior Antonio Hatch led with five steals in the loss.
Although they didn’t capture the win, the seniors will graduate with memories from this and past seasons.
“Being a vocal leader of the team, I’ll never forget that,” said senior Clarence Wright. “I hope that everyone learns that it takes being the best player you can be to make the team as best as it can be.”
This season was different for a lot of players. Even though they had a new head coach in Cameron Ashley, their third in four years, they still had a relationship unlike any other year.
“We had a bigger brotherhood,” said senior Jalen Wilson. “It was more of a family, and it made us that much better, and we hope to use that to our advantage come sectionals.”
The IHSAA state tournament first round began for Griffith on March 6, and ended in a 59-69 loss against Gary West Side, which ended the Panthers season, but the future is still bright for Griffith basketball.
