Baseball season is underway this Spring and the Griffith High School Baseball Team has recently played in their very first game for the upcoming season. After having their season cut short due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the players and coaches were very eager to get back onto the field as soon as possible.

With the pandemic still being a threat to the season, Griffith isn’t taking any chances this time around. Athletes in the program this year are required to follow strict precautions in order to keep themselves and others that are involved safe and healthy in order to play. Aside from the usual social distancing guidelines, players are required to take a COVID-19 survey before every practice along with daily temperature checks. Equipment is also sprayed down after use with antibacterial spray, and masks are required to be worn at all times inside and outside of the campus.

“I just think it can get repetitive sometimes”, said junior Matthew Jovanovich. “Taking all of these precautions along with wearing masks all of the time definitely becomes annoying, but I understand that everything being done is to ensure that we can actually have a complete baseball season this year.”

Even with all of the challenges that COVID-19 is still bringing to the baseball season this year, the bar is still set high for the players. During the 2019 season, the team went 22 and 6 winning sectionals for the 8th time in a row. Back in 2019, Griffith also swept their conference 14-0, but lost to Andrean Highschool in the regional championship.

Senior Kyle Vail believes the team is progressing well. “We’re looking pretty good for not playing in a while. If we keep working at it, I think we could be very successful this season.” Griffith’s next baseball game for the season is on April 19, 2021 against Lake Station.
