Griffith has many clubs that encourage student creativity, dedication and ideas. Supporting these clubs are student leaders who want to share their passion with others.
The National Honor Society is a club intended to excel students in leadership, responsibility and integrity. NHS president and senior Jeremiah Fuentes said he enjoys serving as president. “Leading club meetings is fun. I also get to talk to a lot of different people,” he said.
Fuentes also spoke about the challenges of being a leader. “The most difficult part is making sure everyone stays on top of their assignments and having to communicate with everyone on their progress,” he said. NHS is currently crafting surprise holiday gifts for teachers in its annual Secret Santa project.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a national student organization that focuses on personal growth, leadership skills and community service. FCCLA president and junior Karley Cuneo spoke about what she hopes the club achieves.
“This year, I hope the club can become more involved with our community, gain popularity within the school and grow the number of club members,” she said. This is Cuneo’s first year as president, and she said she is excited to use her leadership skills to create an enjoyable club experience for everyone.
Science Olympiad is a club that prepares students for jobs in STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Club captain and sophomore Lily Buckmaster talked about her experience so far. “Our first tournament was Nov. 22, so now we are working toward improving our work so that by regionals we can hopefully qualify for state,” she said.
When asked why she decided to take the role, Buckmaster said, “I really enjoy science, and I believe it will look good on college or job applications.”
Student leadership fosters important experience for life outside of school and brings students at Griffith closer together.
