Once a month after school, students gather in Jenna Berzy’s room for Book Club, a student-founded organization now in its fourth year.

The club reads a new book each month and meets to discuss it. This year, members have read The Stand, Circe, The Nickel Boys, In Five Years, The Graveyard Book and Project Hail Mary. Students are currently reading Little Women and Orbital.

At the beginning of each school year, students choose the books based on their interests. In previous years, the club selected books around monthly themes.

Enas Issa, a senior and four-year member of the club, said her favorite part is “that [they] all just gather like friends and get to talk about books together.”

“We’ll also have a really good conversation because we’re really good at taking it outside the context of just the book and putting it into our life,” Issa said.

Sponsor Jenna Berzy said she enjoys seeing students read independently throughout the month.

“[It’s] fun to see them reading on their own for fun,” Berzy said.

Because many members are seniors, Berzy said she hopes to recruit more underclassmen next year.

Berzy said some of her favorite selections the club has read include The Nickel Boys and The Shining. Issa said one of her favorites was The Great Alone, adding that although she “would have never picked up a sci-fi book,” she “really liked” Project Hail Mary.
