SCHERERVILLE, IN—Griffith High School hosted prom April 24 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Halls of St. George in Schererville.
This year’s prom, organized by Julie Wencloff, Elise Sintes and the Junior Class Council, featured a casino-night theme. Tickets were sold online for $55, covering the venue, food, music and decorations. Leading up to the dance, students participated in a spirit week with themed outfit days.
Students from other schools, along with underclassmen attending the event, were required to complete approval forms for safety and attendance purposes. Upon arrival, students showed identification and passed through security screening with a metal-detecting wand before entering the venue. Students also checked in at assigned tables, though they were allowed to choose their own seating arrangements.
Food options included walking tacos, hot dogs and nachos with a variety of toppings. Some toppings ordered for the event were missing, resulting in a $600 refund for the school, Wencloff said.
The highlight of the evening was the crowning of prom king and queen. Students voted from a court of their peers after junior court members campaigned throughout the week.
Queen nominees included Makayla De La Osa, Lina Hanke, Liah Hargrove, Janiya Nelson, Jaylene Clemente and Peyton Conner. King nominees were Omari Buchanan, Mason Salazar, Desmond Neylon, Ayden Powell and Asher Harris.
Makayla De La Osa and Asher Harris were crowned prom queen and king.
“It felt pretty good,” De La Osa said. “I was very appreciative of everyone who voted for me, and it was just a really big honor.”
For many students, prom provided a chance to relax, celebrate with friends and make memories before the school year comes to an end.
