On February 19th, Griffith’s Boys Swim team competed at Day 1 of Sectionals at Lake Central High School. Both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays advanced to Day 2 of Sectionals. In the 200 freestyle, David Bacon and Terrence Salazar-Ray finished within a second of each other in 2:25.86 and 2:26.39 earning them 21st and 22nd respectively. In the 100 freestyle, Terrence Salazar-Ray finished in 20th with 1:03.21 and Ian Ince finished in 27th with 1:12.54. In the 50 freestyle, Joshua Hansen (25th) and  Ian Ince (27th) also finished within a second of each other, with times of 31.35 and 32.16. The Day 2 qualifying 200 Freestyle Relay consisting of Terrence Salazar Ray, David Bacon, Joshua Hansen, and Ian Ince finished in 10th with a 2:03.94 which was good enough to send them through to Day 2. In the 100 Backstroke, David Bacon, who swam a time of 1:14.45 finishing at 17th making him the first alternate. Ian Ince also finished 22nd in a time of 1:31.82. The second of two Day 2 Qualifiers, in the 400 freestyle relay consisting of the same 4 swimmers in the 200 freestyle relay. They finished in 4:40.88 earning them 10th. I asked senior David Bacon how he felt about the teams performance and if they had performed the expectations, he said “ I say for the boys that with a small team and with half being new swimmers, we did good. We pulled our own weight and made each event competitive and didn’t let any team get an easy win in our events due to our disadvantage in numbers to bigger teams, which was almost every team.”
