Coach Spotlight: Matthew Thomas

Ryan Rose, Reporter

Matthew Thomas is a Griffith Alumni and graduated in 2018. He is an assistant coach for the Swimming team and Cross Country team. He was a part of both sports in high school. He attended Alma College and now attends Ivy Tech. He wanted to come back to coach at Griffith. He states, “I just love Griffith as a town. I always enjoyed the teams we have had. Even though our teams are small, we have kids that are hard workers.” He enjoys coaching as a whole. Thomas states, “I enjoy seeing the kids improve. It’s really nice to see their reactions when they drop a lot of time. They get the biggest smile on their face and jump up and down. It makes you feel accomplished because you helped teach them and bring them to that point.”

Vincent Pisano, a swimmer on the boys varsity team, was asked his thoughts about Coach Matt. He states, “In swimming when I first started, he taught me a bunch of techniques. It helped me out. Every once in a while he’ll join in exercises even though he’s a coach. It’s always fun when coaches partake in the sport that they are teaching you. It brings another element to the sport.”
